UNIT 3: COMMUNITY SERVICE Lesson 6: Skills 2 I/ OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, students can: listen for specfic information; write a paragraph about volunteer work. 1. Knowledge: a. Grammar : - Present simple tense and present perfect tense . b. Lexical items : - Vocab Extra vocabulary about community service and volunteer work c. Pronunciation: 2. Skills: - Listening, Speaking, Reading,Writing and interactive skills 3. Attitude: - Cooperation, respect, having right and friendly attitudes with friends, teachers in the new school 4. Quality and competence: - Be confident and friendly with the new school environment - Develope listening, speaking skills and cooperative interaction II/ TEACHING AIDS (MATERIALS) 1.Teacher’s preparation: - Lesson plan, Pictures, posters ,textbook,CD-MP3(Computer-Multi projector/cassette/ “sách mềm”) and other materials 2.Students’ preparation: -Textbook, notebook, school things. II.Presentation - T elicits new words III. Activities Listening 1. Discussing the questions (P33) - Asnwer the questions 1. How do you think benefits from volunteer work? 2. How do people benefit from volunteer work? - Ask ss to pick choose a volunteering idea from the previous lessons. 2. Listen to the recording.... (p33) - Remind Ss of the interview between the Global Citizen reporter and the two students Mai and Phuc from Hai Ba Trung School who do volunteer work with Be a Buddy and Go Green. - Recall what happened in the first part of the interview (in Getting Started). - Ask Ss it they can guess what Mai and Phuc will talk about in the second part of the interview. - Play the recording and elicit from Ss the gist of this recording. (It’s about the benefits Mai and Phuc think that volunteer work brings about.) - Play the recording as many times as necessary and have Ss answer the questions. Note that another purpose of this exercise is to prepare Ss for the Writing section later where they learn how to give reasons for their ideas and opinions. 3.Listen again and fill the blank .. (P33) - Play the audio again and let Ss fill in the blanks. Writing 4.Combine the two sentences.... (P33) - Go through the study Skills box with the class. Explain that ‘because’ is used to introduce the reason for something, and it can be put at the beginning of the sentence or in the middle. For exercise 4, Ss will need to identity which sentence is the reason. - For a more advanced class, T may introduce ‘as’ and ‘since’, which are similar in meaning and use to ‘’because’. 5. Look at your volunteer ideas in... (P33) - Tell ss now they will write a paragraph using the ideas they generated in Speaking 4 - T ask ss to answer the questions: ? What do you want to do ? Why do you want to do it? ? How are you going to do it? - Ask ss to read Example in text book - Have one student write his/ her paragraph on the board. - Comment and correct if neccesary. IV.
