UNIT 3: COMMUNITY SERVICE Lesson 3: A Closer Look 2 I/ OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, students can: - Understand the difference between the past simple and the present perfect; - Use the time expressions that go with the past simple and the present perfect 1. Knowledge: a. Grammar : - Review: Past simple. - Present perfect . b. Lexical items : - Vocab the lexical items related to community service and volunteer work. c. Pronunciation: 2. Skills: - Listening, Speaking, Reading,Writing and interactive skills 3. Attitude: - Cooperation, respect, having right and friendly attitudes with friends, teachers in the new school 4. Quality and competence: - Be confident and friendly with the new school environment - Develope listening, speaking skills and cooperative interaction II/ TEACHING AIDS (MATERIALS) 1.Teacher’s preparation: - Lesson plan, Pictures, posters ,textbook,CD-MP3(Computer-Multi projector/cassette/ “sách mềm”) and other materials 2.Students’ preparation: -Textbook, notebook, school things. III/ WORKING ARRANGEMENTS( WAYS OF WORKING ) - Pair work , individual work, group work, T-WC IV/ TEACHING PROCEDURE: 1-Greeting`and checking students’ adtendence: Total: In: ......... Out: .......... . 2-Checking the old lesson 3-New lesson: Teacher’s activities Students’ activities I.Warm up. - Verb form checking: T divides the class into 2 groups. - T reads some verbs in bare form, group 1 say aloud the verbs in past simple form, group 2 say aloud the verbs in past participle form. II. Presentation -Ask Ss to keep books closed. Write the following on the board: -Draw their attention to the difference between sentense (1) and sentence (2) by asking Ss questions such as: When do you think these actions happened: in the past, at present, or in the future? Which sentence tells you exactly when it happened? 1a. Listen again to part of... (P29) - Have Ss open the books and do exercise 1 individually. - Ask Ss to identify the diffrrence between the actions they have underlined ‘Last year we provided evening classes for fifty children’ and ‘We’ve asked people to donate books and clothes to the children’. 1b. When do we use past simple... (P29) - T shows Ss the rule box, and asks them to try to work out the rule first. - Ask them if they know the time expressions that often go with the present perfect and the past simple. Remember! Go through the Remember! Box with Ss. Ask them to make sentences with these words and add more time expressions if they can. III. Activities 2.Past simple or present perfect? ... (P30) - Ask Ss to complete the exercise individually. Then give feedback as a whole class activity. - Before giving correct answers, T asks Ss to tell him/her which phrases in the sentences help them to decide if the verb should be in the present perfect or the past simple. 3. Choose the best answer (P30) - Ss do the exercise individually, then compare the answers with a partner. - T writes the correct answers on the board. - T may explain the differences between the present perfect and the past simple in sentenxes 3-4 and 5-6. 4. With a partner, write sentences.... (P30) - Ss write sentences about themselves using the time expressions, then share them with a partner. - If time is short, the work can be divided between two Ss, but T should ensure that all items are covered. IV. Production 5. In pairs, student A look at the ... (P30) - Remind Ss of what they learned in ‘Getting Srarted’ about ‘Be a Buddy’ and ‘Go Green’. - Divide students into pairs. Tell Ss that to complete this task they will need to use the present perfect and the past simple. - Remind Ss that this is a speaking activity and that they should communicate in complete sentences. - While Ss do the task, go round to monitor to ensure they do not just look at the table and say out the phrases for each other to copy down. - Take note of any common errors and correct them as a class later.
