Much of the earth we live on is covered with soil. Most soil is made of ground - up bits of rocks.
But rocks alone do not make soil. Soil is made when ground rocks mix with other things. They mix with dead leaves and part of dead plants. They mix with dead animals, too. All these things, mixing together for a long, long time, make soil.
Most of the food we eat grows ¡in soil. Qur vegetables grow in soii. Our fruits do, too. The grasses which our animaÌls eat must have soil to grow in. Without soil, we could not grow anything to eat. We could not live without soil.
